In recent times, New Year’s resolutions have become a bit of a joke. Indeed, many poke fun at the idea of gym memberships spiking in January only to fall sharply back down to earth in the following months. Yet, individuals who are looking to attain a healthier lifestyle shouldn’t have a negative or defeatist attitude when drafting their goals for the new year. Rather, by focusing on a few targets you can actually achieve, you’ll have a much better chance at sticking to your long-term fitness plans. With that in mind, here are five simple, but effective, ways to make your resolutions a reality:
Join a Fitness Community
Signing up for a gym membership can produce results for some individuals, but more often than not, people fall by the wayside because they work out alone. On the other hand, joining an existing fitness group, yoga class, or weight-loss club will help people stay motivated during difficult periods.
Measure Performance, Not Results
When it comes to health and wellness, some elements are outside of your control. Even if you work out every day and adhere to a strict diet, you could still fall short of a weight-loss goal, for instance. When forming New Year’s resolutions, then, make sure to do so in terms of performance –– not results. That way, you won’t get discouraged and will be more likely to persevere!
Cut Your Annual Goals in Half
Say, for instance, you want to go down four pants sizes over the course of a year. The issue with setting annual goals, is that 1) they often seem unachievable and 2) they allow for procrastination. Rather than giving yourself an entire year to complete a task, cut your big targets down into smaller, more manageable aspirations. What’s more, by giving yourself less time to reach a goal, you increase its immediacy.
Visit a Doctor
Going to the doctor for a regular check-up is one of the easiest things you can do to ensure your good health. Yet, the fact remains that a large number of people eschew visits to the doctor for years at a time. This is a terrible idea. Find a testing clinic near you instead and schedule an appointment with a medical professional ASAP.
Build on Last Year
If you were successful in reaching weight-loss goals last year, don’t punish yourself this time around. Your body may not be “ready” to lose quite as much as you did previously, so always set goals with a little perspective in mind!
