In 1970, 20,000 black rhinos used to freely roam in Kenya, says Earth Watch. However, today, that number has declined to just 540, a big enough drop for the black rhino to be categorized as critically endangered. The reason for this is excessive poaching to record levels, driven by the rising demand for rhino horns. These horns sell for exorbitant prices on the black market.
