Promoting a healthy workplace and a happier workforce

Make healthy changes to your office, including your office furniture, and you will soon reap the benefits of a more productive workforce.

Research in recent years show us that sitting for more than 4 hours a day can have a negative impact on our wellbeing, in some cases increasing the risk of;

  • Obesity
  • Heart disease
  • Dementia
  • Diabetes
  • Back ache
  • Depression

Under British workplace law it is mandatory to provide your staff with a DSE assessment of their sitting position whilst at a desk. The truth is that there is no correct sitting position.

Healthy work place. Productive staff

A sit-stand workplace, or active work station helps to promote an active workforce and increases productivity. By encouraging flexibility to stand or sit while working, staff have been proven to be happier, more creative and more motivated within the working environment.

What can I do to encourage a heathier workplace?

Encouraging staff to get up from their work desks not only keeps them fitter, but also creates a more energised work space, leading to improved communication and lifted staff morale.

Standing rather than sitting increases calorie burn by up to 40%

If you can’t invest in a sit-stand desk for every staff member, consider buying just one or two for your business and encourage hot-desking to allow different staff members to utilise it throughout the working week.

Smaller changes can also impact positively on your workforce, encourage standing whilst on the phone, this not only improves general fitness but improves tone of voice and projects a confident telephone manner. Other suggestions include supplying fruit for your team, organising a group lunchtime walk or suggesting that get up and walk to a colleague’s desk, rather than sending internal emails to one another.
